Zone (0–5 Feet)
Remove leaves, pine needles, and other combustible debris; Keep
roofs and gutters clean; Avoid combustible mulch directly against
the structure; Store firewood well away from the home during fire
season; Maintain decks, fences, and attached structures free of
combustible debris; Keep vents screened and in good repair.
Small improvements in this zone can provide significant protection
during an ember storm.

Zone 1 (5–30 Feet): Lean, Clean, and Green

This zone focuses on reducing the amount of vegetation capable of

carrying fire toward the structure.

Homeowners should:

Remove dead vegetation; Keep grasses maintained; Separate

shrubs to reduce fire spread; Prune tree branches away from roofs;

Remove vegetation beneath trees that can create “ladder fuels.”

The objective is not to eliminate landscaping but to reduce

continuous fuels.

Zone 2 (30–100 Feet)

The outer zone reduces wildfire intensity before flames reach the

home. Recommended practices include:

Increasing spacing between trees; Removing dead or dying

vegetation; Reducing concentrations of brush; Eliminating ladder

fuels; Maintaining healthy forests through periodic vegetation

management. Properly managed forests are generally healthier and

more resilient during wildfires.
